Hannah, can you hear me? Wherever you are, look up, Hannah.

The clouds are lifting. The sun is breaking through.

We are coming out of the darkness into the light.

We are coming into a new world, a kindlier world, where men will rise above their hate, their greed and brutality.

Look up, Hannah. The soul of man has been given wings, and at last he is beginning to fly.

He is flying into the rainbow - into the light of hope, into the future,

the glorious future that belongs to you, to me, and to all of us. Look up, Hannah. Look up.

From Charlie Chaplins speech in the film The Great Dictator (1940),

Phoenix rising! It must be the Northern Flights...

Daily Mail Reporter

IN ancient myths, it is linked with the flaming presence of the sun. So it is only fitting that a phoenix; should be the shape taken by these stunning aurora borealis. With wings outspread, the bird appears to be soaring high over a lake in Iceland, illuminating the night sky with its eerie glow. Photographer Hallgrimur P Helgason waited an hour to get the perfect shot of the phenomenon, which is caused by sun particles entering the Earth's atmosphere. `It's a thrill shooting the aurora, especially when they are so playful,' the 64-year-old said. `I always get an adrenaline kick.'

JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS

Thomas Mann 1933

PHARAOH'S DREAM

Page 914

"WELL then, Pharaoh had betaken himself once more to instructive On out of unconquerable yearning to escape from the empire of Amun and commune with the shiny-pates of the sun-house about Harmakhis-Khepere-Atum-Re, Aton. The court chroniclers, puckering their lips and obsequiously crouching, mincingly entered in the record His Majesty's beautiful resolve; and how thereupon he mounted a great car made of electrum, together with Nefertiti, called Nefernefruaton, the Queen of the lands, whose body was fruitful and whose arm was about her consort; and how he had radiantly taken his beautiful way, followed in other cars by Tiy, the mother of God, Nezemmut, the Queen's sister, Baketaton, his own sister, and many chamberlains and ladies-in-waiting with ostrich-feather fans on their backs. The heavenly bark Star of the Two Lands had also been used by stretches; the chroniclers had set down how Pharaoh, sitting under his canopy, had eaten a roast pigeon, also held the bone out to the Queen and she ate from it, and how he put into her mouth sweetmeats dipped in wine.
At On, Amenhotep entered his palace in the temple, district and slept, there dreamlessly the first night, exhausted from ,the journey. The following day he began by sacrificing to Re-Horakhte with bread and beer, wine, birds, and incense. After that he listened to the Vizier of the North, who spoke before him at length, and then, regardless of the headache that had brought on, devoted the rest of the day to the much-desired talks with the priests of the God. These conferences, which at the moment greatly occupied Amenhotep's mind, had been taken up with the subject of the bird Bennu, also / Page 915 / called Offspring of Fire, because it was said that he was motherless, and moreover actually his own father, since dying and beginning were the same for him. For he burned himself up in his nest made of myrrh and came forth from the ashes again as young Bennu. This happened, some authorities said, every five hundred years; happened in fact in the temple of the sun at On, whither the bird, a heron-like eagle, purple and gold, came for the purpose from Arabia or even India. Other authorities asserted that it brought with it an egg made of myrrh, as big as it could carry, wherein it had put its deceased father, that is to say actually itself, and laid it down on the sun-altar. These two assertions might- subsist side by side- after all, there subsists so much side by side, differing things may both be true and only different expressions of the same truth. But what Pharaoh first wanted to know, what he wanted to discuss, was how much time had passed out of the five hundred years which lay between the bird and the egg; how far they were on the one hand from the last appearance and on the other from the next one; in short, at what point of the phoenixyear they stood. The majority opinion of the priests was that it must be somewhere about the riddle of the period. They reasoned that if it was still near its beginning, then some memory of the last appearance of Bennu must still exist and that was not the case. But suppose they were near the end of one period and the beginning of the next; then they must reckon on the impending or immediate return of the time-bird. But none of them counted on having the experience in his lifetime so the only remaining possibility was that they were about the middle of the period. Some of the shiny-pates went so far as to suspect that they would always remain in the middle, the mystery of the Bennu bird being precisely this: that the distance between the last appearance of the Phoenix and his next one was always the same, always a middle point. But the mystery was not in itself the important thing to Pharaoh. The burning question to be discussed, which was the object of his visit, and which then he did discuss for a whole halfday with the shiny-pates, was the doctrine that the fire-bird's myrrh egg in which he had shut up the body of his father did not thereby become heavier. For he had made it anyhow as large and heavy as he could possibly carry, and if he was still able to carry it after he had put his father's body in it, then it must follow that the egg had not thereby increased in weight.
That was an exciting and enchanting fact of world-wide importance. In young Pharaoh's eyes it was worthy of the most circumstantial exposition. If one added to a body another body and it did not become heavier thereby, that must mean there were immaterial bodies - or differently and better put, incorporeal realities, immaterial as sunlight; or, again differently and still better put, there was the spiritual; and this spiritual was ethereally embodied in the Bennu-father,
/ Page 916 / whom the myrrh egg received while altering its character thereby in the most exciting and significant way. For the egg was altogether a definitely female kind of thing; only the female among birds laid eggs, and nothing could be more mother-female than the great egg out of which once the world came forth. But Bennu the sun-bird, motherless and his own father, made his own egg himself, an egg against the natural order, a masculine egg, a father-egg, and laid it as a manifestation of fatherhood, spirit, and light upon the alabaster table of the sun-divinity.

Pharaoh could not talk enough with the sun-calendar men of the temple of Re about this event and its significance for the developing nature of Aton. He discussed deep into the night, he discussed to excess, he wallowed in golden immateriality and father spirit, and when the priests were worn out and their shiny pates nodded, he was still not tired and could not summon resolution to dismiss them - almost as though he were afraid to. stay alone. But at last he did dismiss them, nodding and stumbling to their rest, -and himself sought his bedchamber."

THE PHOENIX

Myth and Symbol in Ancient Egypt

R. T. Rundle Clark 1959

Page 245

"The Phoenix, known to the Egyptians as the Benu Bird, was one of the primeval forms of the High God. The Shu Texts epitomize the appearance of light and life out of the original darkness and chaos as: / Page 246 / 'that breath of life which emerged fiom the throat of the Benu Bird, the son of Re in whom Atum appeared in the primeval nought, infinity, darkness and nowhere.'

One has to imagine a perch extending out of the waters of the Abyss. On it rests a grey heron, the herald of all things to come. It opens its beak and breaks the silence of the primeval night with the call of life and destiny, which 'determines what is and what is not to be'. The Phoenix, therefore, embodies the original Logos, the Word or declaration of destiny which mediates between the divine mind and created things. It is essentially an aspect of God, self created. and not a minor deity. But the heron form is not to be taken too literally; it is a way of expressing one of the basic activities of God rather than a historical or naturalistic figure. It is the first and deepest manifestation of the 'soul' of the High God.
Underlying all Egyptian speculation is the belief that time is composed of recurrent cycles which are divinely appointed: the day, the week of ten days, the month, the year-even longer periods of 30, 400 or 1460 years, determined according to the conjunctions of sun, moon, stars and inundation. In a sense, when the Phoenix gave out the primeval call it initiated all these cycles, so it is the patron of all division of time, and its temple at Heliopolis became the centre of calendrical regula... tion. As the herald of each new dispensation, it becomes, optimistically, the harbinger of good tidings. During the Middle Kingdom the Benu Bird became the 'soul' of Osiris and the symbol for the planet Venus-the morning star which precedes the sun out of the Underworld and is the herald of a new day. In spite of these minor roles, however, the Benu Bird continues to be 'he who created himself' -a form of the High God. In fact, Atum...Re, Shu and Osiris meet in the bird as the symbol of the godhead in time.

Fig. 40. The Phoenix (in Coffin Text 335) (omitted)

The Egyptians had two ideas about the origin of life. The first was that it emerged in God out of the Primeval Waters; the other was, that vital essence-Hike-was brought hither from a distant, magical source. The latter was 'the Isle of Fire' -the place of everlasting light beyond the limits of the world, where the gods were born or revived and whence they were sent into the world. The Phoenix is the chief messenger from this inaccessible land of divinity. A Coffin Text makes the victorious soul say:
'I come from the Isle of Fire, having filled my body with Hike, like "that bird" who [came and] filled the world with that which it had not known.'44
So the Phoenix came from the far;away world of eternal life, bringing the message of light and life to a world wrapped in
the helplessness of the primeval night. Its flight is the width of the world: 'over oceans, seas and rivers,'45
to land, at last, in Heliopolis, the symbolic centre of the earth where it will announce the new age.
We are told that 'the watchers tremble' with joy when they behold it coming, with the assurance that creation is still active and the world is not yet to be reabsorbed into the Abyss. It is for this reason that Atum can say, in Chapter 17 of the Book of the Dead:

Page 248

'I am that great Benu Bird in Heliopolis, who determines what is and what is not to be.'
This great symbol, the most persuasive in the Egyptian repertoire, was misunderstood by Herodotus who, as a stranger to the inner meaning of Egyptian religion, brought it down to the level of a fairy,;tale:
'There is another sacred bird called the Phoenix. I have never seen it myself except in pictures, for it is extremely rare, only appearing, according to the people of Heliopolis, once in five hundred years, when it is seen after the death of its parent. If the pictures are accurate its size and appear,; ance are as follows: its plumage is partly red and partly gold, while in shape and size it is very much like an eagle. They (the Heliopolitans) tell a story about this bird which I personally find incredible: the Phoenix is said to come from Arabia, carrying the parent bird encased in myrrh; it proceeds to the temple of the sun and there buries the body. In order to do this, they say it first forms a ball as big as it can carry, then, hollowing out the ball, it inserts its (dead) parent, subsequently covering over the aperture with fresh myrrh. The ball is then exactly the same weight as it was at first. The Phoenix bears this ball to Egypt, all encased as I have said, and deposits it in the temple of the sun. Such is their myth about this bird.'46
This is very different from the hieratic figure in Chapter 83 of the Book of the Dead-the 'Spell for becoming the Benu Bird.' The soul declares:
'I flew up as the Primeval God and assumed forms
I grew in the seed and disguised myself as the Tortoise, I am the seed corn of every god,
I am yesterday. . .
I am Horus, the god who gives light by means of his body. . .

I come as day, I appear in the steps of the gods, Page 249
I am Khons (the moon) who proceeds through the universe.
Here the Phoenix is the principle of life, not so much in any particular form but the constant divine power in all its supreme manifestations, whether natural or mythological. For the author of the rubric to this text, the Phoenix was a synthesis of the main forms of life, a general symbol to include all particular ones."

NUMBER

THE SEARCH FOR THE SIGMA CODE

Cecil Balmond 1998

Preface to the New Edition

Page 5
Twelve years ago a little boy entered my imagination as he hopped across the centuries and played with numbers. I began to see how the simple architecture of our decimal system could be constructed in secret ways — not a building project this time but an abstract one. On the surface of our arithmetic countless combinations of numbers take part in tedious and exacting calculations but underneath it all there is pattern, governed by a repeating code of integers. The Sigma Code reduces numbers to a single digit and the illusion of the many is seen to be but the reflection of a few. This is not a book on maths: this is a book for anyone who can carry out simple sums in their heads, and who won't be short-changed knowingly.
When Number 9 first came out I received mail from many who played with numbers. They chased patterns; some had special numbers and even mystical systems. I was tempted to write about numerology but resisted. I wanted to write about the intricacy of what the.. numbers actually do and leave the reader to wonder about the larger irrational that seems to hover around such constructions.
If I were writing this book today the numbers would have featured in a wider context of structuring nature's patterns, and also playing the role of animator in algorithms that create unique architectural forms and shapes. I would also include my previous research into other base systems. But this book was a first step which came from a child-like urge, like playing with building blocks, to build out of our numbers — just the simple 1, 2, 3, up to number 9.

NUMBER = 534259 = 1 = 534259 NUMBER

NUMBER = 234559 NUMBER

NUMBER = 534259 = 1 = 534259 NUMBER

NUMBERS = 5342591 = 2 = 5342591 NUMBERS

SBUMNER = 1234559 = SBUMNER

NUMBERS = 5342591 = 2 = 5342591 NUMBERS

Quantum entanglement

Quantum entanglement is a quantum mechanical phenomenon in which the quantum states of two or more objects have to be described with reference to each other, even though the individual objects may be spatially separated. This leads to correlations between observable physical properties of the systems. For example, it is possible to prepare two particles in a single quantum state such that when one is observed to be spin-up, the other one will always be observed to be spin-down and vice versa, this despite the fact that it is impossible to predict, according to quantum mechanics, which set of measurements will be observed. As a result, measurements performed on one system seem to be instantaneously influencing other systems entangled with it. But quantum entanglement does not enable the transmission of classical information faster than the speed of light (see discussion in next section below).

Quantum entanglement applications in the emerging technologies of quantum computing and quantum cryptography, and has been used to realize quantum teleportation experimentally. At the same time, it prompts some of the more philosophically oriented discussions concerning quantum theory. The correlations predicted by quantum mechanics, and observed in experiment, reject the principle of local realism , which is that information about the state of a system should only be mediated by interactions in its immediate surroundings. Different views of what is actually occurring in the process of quantum entanglement can be related to different interpretations of quantum mechanics.

THE STRANGE WORLD OF QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT

by Paul Comstock March 30th, 2007

Briab Clegg received a physics degree from Cambridge University and is the author of numerous books and articles on the history of science. His most recent book is The God Effect : Quantum Entanglement, Science’s Strangest Phenomenon

What you write in your book about entanglements so startling, it’s hard to believe. Let’s start with a definition. What is quantum entanglement?

Entanglement is a strange feature of quantum physics, the science of the very small. It’s possible to link together two quantum particles – photons of light or atoms, for example – in a special way that makes them effectively two parts of the same entity. You can then separate them as far as you like, and a change in one is instantly reflected in the other. This odd, faster than light link, is a fundamental aspect of quantum science – Erwin Schrödinger, who came up with the nameentanglement” called it “the characteristic trait of quantum mechanics.” Entanglement is fascinating in its own right, but what makes it really special are dramatic practical applications that have become apparent in the last few years. Is it possible that entangled particles are not actually in immediate communication, but are simply programmed to behave in the same way? Much like twins separated at birth who live eerily similar lives - assume the same professions, marry similar spouses, etc. This is an obvious possibility. John Bell, who devised a lot of the theory for testing the existence of entanglement, covered it in a paper called “Bertlmann’s Socks and the Nature of Reality.” Reinhold Bertlmann, a colleague of Bell’s, always wore socks of different colors. Bell pointed out that, if you saw one of Bertlmann’s feet coming around the corner of a building and it had a pink sock on, you would instantly know the other sock wasn’t pink, even though you had never seen it. The color difference was programmed in when Bertlmann put his socks on.But the quantum world is very different. If you take some property of a particle, the equivalent of color, say the spin of an electron, it doesn’t have the value pre-programmed. It has a range of probabilities as to what the answer might be, but until you actually measure it, there is no fixed value. What happens with a pair of entangled electrons is you measure the spin of one. Until that moment, neither of them had a spin with a fixed value. But the instant you take the measurement on one, the other immediately fixes its spin (say to the opposite value). These “quantum socks” were every possible color until you looked at one. Only then did it become pink, and the other instantly took on another color. You write that Einstein among other scientists could not accept quantum entanglement. It seems to throw out the whole notion of cause and effect. How confident are physicists that quantum entanglement exists and what are the implications for science and the scientific method? Einstein had problems with the whole of quantum physics – which is ironic, as it was based on his Nobel Prize winning paper on the photoelectric effect. What he didn’t like was the way quantum particles don’t have fixed values for their properties until they are observed – he couldn’t relate to a universe where probability ruled. That’s why he famously said that God doesn’t play dice. I think an even better quote, less well known, was when he wrote:“I find the idea quite intolerable that an electron exposed to radiation should choose of its own free will, not only its moment to jump off, but also its direction. In that case, I would rather be a cobbler, or even an employee in a gaming house, than a physicist.”

Einstein believed that underneath these probabilities were fixed, hidden realities we just couldn’t see. That was why he dreamed up the idea of entanglement in 1935. It was to show that either quantum theory was incomplete, because it said there was no hidden information, or it was possible to instantly influence something at a distance. As that seemed incredible, he thought it showed that quantum theory was wrong. It did take a long time to prove that entanglement truly existed. It wasn’t until the 1980s that it was clearly demonstrated. But it has been shown without doubt that this is the case. Entanglement exists, and is being used in very practical ways.Entanglement doesn’t throw away the concept of cause and effect. But it does underline the fact that quantum particles really do only have a range of probabilities on the values of their properties rather than fixed values. And while it seems to contradict Einstein’s special relativity, which says nothing can travel faster than light, it’s more likely that entanglement challenges our ideas of what distance and time really mean. Similarly, entanglement is no challenge to the scientific method. We need to use a different kind of math, but this is still the same science.Where do you see the first practical applications of entanglement ?

The first thing most people think of, including a report produced by for the Department of Defense shortly after entanglement was proved real, is being able to use it to communicate faster than light. The link of entanglement works instantaneously at any distance. So it would be amazing if it could be used to send a signal. In fact this isn’t possible. Although there is a real connection between two entangled particles, we don’t know what the information is that it’s going to send. If I measure the spin of an entangled electron, yes it communicates the value somehow to its twin – but I can’t use it. I had no idea what the spin was going to be. This is just as well, as faster than light messages travel backwards in time. If I could send a message instantly it would be received in the past, and that really would disrupt cause and effect. However, there are still real and amazing applications of entanglement. It can be used to produce unbreakable encryption. If you send each half of a set of entangled pairs to either end of a communications link, then the randomly generated but linked properties can be used as a key to encrypt information. If anyone intercepts the information it will break the entanglement, and the communication can be stopped before the eavesdropper picks up any data. Then there are quantum computers. These are conceptual machines that can crack problems that would take an ordinary computer longer than the lifetime of the universe to solve. We already know how to program a quantum computer to do some amazing things. For instance, if I have an unsorted database with a million entries, I will typically have to try out 500,000 of these before hitting on the right one. (Try looking for a specific number, rather than a person, in the paper version of the New York telephone directory.) But using a quantum computer it only takes 1,000 attempts. Unfortunately, though, Quantum computers are almost impossible to make.Instead of storing information in bits on silicon chips, each of which can hold 0 or 1, a quantum computer uses quantum particles like photons or atoms as the information stores. Each particle can store infinitely long numbers, but if you look at the particle, it changes the value. Entanglement means you can interact with these quantum bits (qubits for short) without frying your quantum memory. There are several technologies being tried to build the first, basic quantum computers, but they all rely on entanglement to get information into and around the system. Most dramatic of all is quantum teleportation. And for those Trekkies out there, tell us about the possibility of teleportation. It’s more than a possibility, it has been done, but only on a very small scale. What a Star Trek transporter is supposed to do is make an exact copy of an object or a person somewhere else. There’s a fundamental problem here. Because looking at a quantum particle changes it, you can’t scan a particle, see what it looks like and make an exact copy. So it might seem that teleportation is impossible. Entanglement lets you get around this restriction. By interacting the particle with one half of an entangled pair, and then putting the other half of the pair through a special process, a bit like a logic gate in a computer, it’s possible to make an identical particle at a remote location. We can only do this because the entanglement transfers the quantum information without us ever knowing what it was. In the process, the originalparticle loses its properties. Teleportation isn’t copying, it effectively destroys the original. This doesn’t mean you’ll be able to rush out and buy a transporter at Radio Shack next week. This process has been done with large molecules, similar in size to a bacterium, so it’s possible that we could teleport something living. But it won’t work with something as big as a person. You would have to scan every single molecule in the body and reassemble at the other end, which doesn’t look like it’s every going to be practical. Maybe this isn’t so bad, though. Remember, the original is destroyed (something Star Trek glosses over). Okay, you get an identical copy, but would you be prepared to be vaporized if you knew an exact, indistinguishable copy was going to be created the other side of the world? I’m not ecstatic about flying, but by comparison it sounds a safe option. Could entanglement prove to be the “Holy Grail” for merging scientific and mystical, religious thought? There have certainly been people who have tried to draw this kind of conclusion, but I think they are mistaken. Entanglement is a wholly physical process. I called my book The God Effect because it has been suggested that entanglement is the working mechanism of the Higgs boson, a very special particle that gives everything its mass, and has been called the God Particle, because it’s so fundamental. But that’s just a label. It’s also true that Nobel Prize winning physicist Brian Josephson has suggested that entanglement could explain telepathy (much to the irritation of paranormal debunker James Randi), but Josephson was saying if telepathy exists, then here’s a physical mechanism that could explain it – he wasn’t indulging in mystical navel-gazing. What entanglement (and quantum theory in general) does do is remind us is that the real world is much stranger than we imagine. That’s because the way things are in the world of the very small is totally different to large scale objects like desks and pens. We can’t rely on experience and common sense to guide us on how things are going to work at this level. And that can make some of the effects of quantum physics seem mystical. In the end, this is something similar to science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke’s observation that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

May 28th, 2007 at 5:14 pm I too have seriously considered the idea that we should be looking for entangled communications from outside worlds. When I originally asked about it on a physics blog 6 years ago, they told me that entanglement can’t extend great distances. That seems to be proven wrong now. What is the current excuse for the improbability of entangled communications?
Wonderful article, thanks.

May 28th, 2007 at 5:15 pm Since the entanglement link is based upon probabilities, it may take some re-readings of the receiving spin to establish what the spin *isn’t* to get the spin of the sending particle. Unfortunately, this rather depends upon pre-syncing to establish the sending spin and that can’t be guaranteed to co-incide with the receiving spin.
Suggestions about using a returning particle pairing may be useless for exactly the same reasons vice versa.

The thought of being vaporised to be handed over to a twin scares things out of me, too. I have enough trouble coping with the fact that this could be used to duplicate my brain somewhere else let alone set it going on it’s own path over there (wherever there is), and then to trust to it and be vaporised? No way.

May 28th, 2007 at 5:19 pm You say that you cannot send information because you will not know the way it will be spinning, but I think the fact that you simply sent a signal of any kind (as opposed to not sending a signal) means that you did send information. Here is a simple illustration:

I have a “jar” with one particle (or one half of particle A depending on how you think of entanglement), and another “jar” with particle B in my home in the United States. You have the corresponding particles A and B in England. You “measure” A if by land, or B if by sea. When the one you measured communicates to the one I have, causing it to have a specific spin, I have learned something based on which one you chose to measure. Thus you have communicated to me faster than light.

Taking this a step further, if in response to your measuring A, I measure B to tell you that I got the signal, I do not see how there would be time travel in either of our frames of reference.

Am I missing something, or is it just this simple, yet somehow nobody has figured it out?

May 28th, 2007 at 5:20 pm Hey Matt,

You forgot one thing, check it out…

You have a “jar” with particle A and another “jar” with particle B in your home in the United States. I have the corresponding particles A and B in separate jars in England. I measure the spin of either particle A or B in attempt to communicate the signal to you using the entanglement of the two particles (A and A or B and B). But, the trick is that YOU have to measure the spins of BOTH of your particles in order to tell which one I measured in England.

So after you measured both of your particles you’d need to get in touch with me in England and ask for my measurement, only then could you deduce which particle, A or B, that I measured originally (I guess it would be the particle with an opposite mathematical value for spin compared to yours, or something like that).

July 30th, 2007 at 6:08 am Saying you cannot use it to communicate is simply myopic.
You do not need to know what the value which you will set in order to communicate. You use the positional transition, like edge detection in electronics signal processing.

Please let me demonstrate.

I set up a four bit message as follows in binary.
xy xy xy xy

Each bit is actually two unrelated halves of entangled pairs. By changing the x of the duo I have a 0 by changing the y I have a 1.
So if the values are scaled as follows
8 4 2 1
and I set all the pairs to represent 1, I have sent the number 16.
So if you can tell that changing one of a pair has altered the other which is clearly stated that you can in the first paragraph, then you can communicate.

November 26th, 2007 at 4:05 am Perhaps we are looking at what can be perceived as a unification of multiple governing forces. I am not a stick in the mud as far as the mathematical implications of the speed of light is concerned, so I have no reservations about believing that something could move faster. And indeed, the likely hood that this “entangled” effect is being misinterpreted is rather great,.. considering the most logical explanation would be that of a “programmed” consequence. ( Of course this means I don’t believe you when you say that particles can be teleported ) But perhaps this phenomena is observable evidence of the unification of governing forces. However, should this be accurate, or perhaps even embellished theoretically and philosophically, there is no stable platform from which it can be mathematically conceived, as is of course made very clear by the principles of relativity. How willing would you be, or your physics professor, for that matter, to throw away the fundamentals of physics for the postulation of a GUT?

May 28th, 2008 at 4:44 pm Well, looks like this happens due to the observer…

I suggest that the spin can be predictable, but the tecnology of the observer must be newer, I dont know how the observers see those scales today, i believe they throw some kind of laser or any other kind of energy to the point of view that affects it and make it change.

The Entangled effect seems very confuse, how they could find the entangled particles brothers and estimulated then considering that these brothers could be anywhere in all the universe?! this probability is for sure impossible… the entaglement effect must be created by the observer on the Lab not by Bigbang or any kind of born from far distances.

June 5th, 2008 at 5:31 pm If so many people have said that they can create entangled pairs, then why haven’ they try to develop a way of inputing data, like binary to one of the pair and see what happens to the other.

if one spins one way and the other spins opposite. like two gears spinning, why can’t we just “grab” the one gear and turn it to and fro, and the other one reacting to transmit information.

maybe I’m just grossly simplifying the subject. But it seems to me like there is so much talk about what might happen and not enough physical experimentation and just find out what happens and observe it.

  • Thank god this isn’t an English discussion, Steve. Scientists are notorious for their ignorance of grammar rules.

I am a novice in Physics. I only studied for 1.5 years at UCSD and further studies were via juco and, lately, as my interest has grown and time has allowed. I am intrigued by entanglement and quantum theory, though. It doesn’t seem to me that Einstein’s rule has been broken, because the struggle has been trying to word quantum theory in relativistic terms. Speed is not being violated because we are not really referring to classical mechanics and motion. We seem to be referring to state-changes. Also, the concept that we have [only]2 discrete particles is suspect to me now. What we seem to really have is an infinitely expanding particle that can be “measured” only in one dimension, by our modern standards of measurement. Ugh, this is why q-theory is the stuff that makes one “dizzy”.

I believed we have reached the metaphorical “edge of the Earth” and now we have to be brave enough to sail past it.

Despite the denials, we\'d not get to know for a few years I\'d guess. There\'s too many vested interests ranging from the church to governments, the military and big business.

SETI has the Wow signal and at least one other signal that have ALL the hallmarks of being extra terrestial. A couple of days ago I watched as the graphics catched or stumbled upon a big gaussian (not the same one as mentioned some place else). It did not come up in the numbers thereafter and I did unfortunately not take the number of the WU, sorry to say.

Possibly (but very uncertainly) it may have been WU 06mr08ah.13828.82132.6.8.73._2_0 . In any case, that WU had a spike of 1.70, a gaussian of -8.01 (which is low and not the opposite as some other like to tell) and a pulse of 100996 (Yes!). No triplet. If it was that one, it could be interesting...ID: 766204

The problem is, it doesn't know.

Only humans can make that determination, and only after revisiting what they determine are *possible* candidates and scanning their locations again and again.

How many unconfirmed signals found? Other than the WOW! one

Zero

No signal has ever been found which had the characteristics of the WOW! signal (ie; unconfirmed origin and not a natural source, either a glitch, interference, or the real thing)

The closest that the SETI@Home team ever came was this one- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_source_SHGb02%2B14a

Unlike WOW!, this is not something that appeared for an instant and could never be found again; this was found again, and presumably can still be detected by any radio telescope with sufficient capability. This is not an "unconfirmed signal" because it was determined not to be a signal at all.

I'll admit, I'm not satisfied with the explanations as to why it was eventually determined not to be a candidate signal, and to my knowledge, no thorough public explanation has ever been given. It's not that I personally think it's a signal (I don't), I'd just like to know exactly why scientists are so sure it's not.

Thats my point! People argue over the very basic question whether a signal is a candidate. It doesnt fit the bill so lets dismiss it therefore we havent got an 'unconfirmed \ potential signal' to talk about.

Im not satisfied either but I think its highly unlikely you'll get scientists to agree. The signal appears to meet all the criteria for a 'candidate' but is dismissed because 'there's nothing in that part of the sky' and something to do with rotational period or something I mean were either of those two conditions in SETI's original conditions for a candidate?

The WOW! signal did apparently fit the criteria for artificial origin, but an Earthbound source or glitch in the system couldn't be ruled out since it could never be detected again or independently verified by any other telescope.

As for the SETI@Home signal, while I think they know the criteria better than we do, I admit that I don't fully understand the explanation. Just because I don't understand it doesn't mean I don't agree with it. If the signal were as compelling as you seem to think it is, it wouldn't have been dismissed, certainly not by the SETI@Home team which has put years' worth of effort and investment into this project, and certainly not by other SETI teams, like the SETI Institute.

I may not be happy that it turned out not be a signal from ET, and I may not be personally satisfied with the explanations, but I have to concede that they know more about the signal than I do and they know more about why it's not a good candidate than I do.

Actually.. no - though I see where you might have drawn a hopeful conclusion. I just always feel it\'s important to snuff out wrongful conspiracy theories concerning my day job. Things are never are as complicated/secretive/conspiratorial as people think (or hope in some cases).

Yeah, but everyone likes a god conspiracy theory :)

THE SEARCH FOR EXTRA TERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE

Edited by Ben Nova and Byron Preiss 1990

"Two types of unexplained signals were detected during this search. The first kind is quite rare, with the best example being the 'Wow' signal found in 1977. This /Page 257/ name was unintenionally applied from Jerry Ehman's comments in the margin of the computer printout when he noticed the signal. The signal was unmistakably strong and had all the characteristics of an extra-terrestrial signal."

"We searched in the direction of the 'Wow!' signal hundreds of times after its discovery and over a wide frequency range. We never found the signal again.

"...the 'Wow signal was received only once..."

"What was the wow signal? Probably we will never know."

"So far the most important find was a signal detected at the Ohio University 'Big Ear' radio telescope in August 1977. Known by SETI researchers and enthusiasts as the 'Wow' signal, after the monoyllabic exclamation written on the computer print-out by an astonished astronomer at the station, it lasted exactly thirty-seven seconds and appears to have come from the direction of Sagittarius. Although, most strikingly, the signal was a narrow-band signal precisely at the hydrogen frequency of 1420 MHz, it has not been detected even a second time, in Sagittarius or anywhere else.

So, what of the future? Is the continuing search for intelligent life in the Universe a total waste of money, as its opponents insist, or are we perhaps on the threshold of a great discovery?

Tlamatini - Wikipedia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tlamatini (plural tlamatinime) is a Nahuatl language word meaning "someone who knows something", generally translated as "wise man". The word is analyzable as derived from the transitive verb mati "to know" with the prefix tla- indicating an unspecified inanimate object translatable by "something" and the derivational suffix -ni meaning "a person who are characterized by ...": hence tla-mati-ni "a person who is characterized by knowing something" or more to the point "a knower".[1]

The famous Nahuatl language translator and interpreter Miguel León-Portilla refers to the tlamatini as philosophers and they are the subject of his book Aztec Thought and Culture.[2][3]

Why eminent scientists
(including Stephen Hawking)
say this could be an alien spaceship

by John Naish

Shaped like a cigar and a quarter of a mile long, it's hurtling through the solar system at 196,000mph...

Close but no cigar: Artists impression of Oumuamua speeding through space

COULD this finally be our first close encounter, the visit from ET we have waited our whole lives for? Scientists led by Stephen Hawking are today using high-tech scanners to discover if a huge, cigar-shaped space object currently hurtling through our solar system was sent by an alien civilisation.
The object in question, christened `Oumuamua', is about a quarter of a mile long, 260ft wide and currently travelling at 196,000mph. And while it could just be an asteroid, barmy as it may seem, researchers are taking seriously the possibility that it could instead be a spaceship.
The team of scientists, called Breakthrough Listen, will use the world's largest directable radio telescope, at Green Bank in West Virginia, to follow it for ten hours.
They are listening for electromagnetic signals, no stronger than those emitted by a mobile phone, that cannot be produced by natural celestial bodies. If they find them, it would be be proof that extraterrestrial forces really could-be at play.
For the moment, they are trying to contain their excitement. But the name they have given this bizarre object betrays their optimism. Oumuamua is a Hawaiian term meaning `a messenger from afar arriving first'. (The far less sexy official name is A/207 U). Most intriguingly, it is the wrong shape for an asteroid — they are typically round.
Hawking and his colleagues at Breakthrough Listen report: 'Researchers working on long-distance space transportation have previously suggested that a cigar or needle shape is the most likely architecture for an interstellar spacecraft, since this would minimise friction and damage from interstellar gas and dust.'
Another oddity is that Oumuamua is flying very 'cleanly', without emitting the usual cloud of space dust that astronomers observe around asteroids.
Experts say this suggests it is made of something dense: probably rock, but possibly metal.
It was first detected on October 19 by a long-running research programme called Pan-STARRS, which uses powerful telescopes to photograph and monitor the night sky at the University of Hawaii. Its amazing speed has led some experts to conclude it is the first such object to have come towards us from outside our solar system. Analysts also say its faintly red colour indicates it has been subjected to interstellar cosmic radiation which is harsher than we experience in our solar system.

THE fact that it doesn't seem to have engines or show signs of propulsion may wreck the interplanetary-spacecraft theory. But Professor Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist from Harvard University, suggests it might just be coasting.
`Perhaps the aliens have a mothership that travels fast and releases baby spacecraft that freely fall into planetary systems on a reconnaissance mission,' Professor Loeb posited to the journal Scientific American.
`In such a case, we might be able to intercept a communication signal between the different spacecraft.' While he acknowledges that the chances of detecting alien activity are 'very small', Prof Loeb adds that it's 'prudent' to check. After all, it could even turn out to be some sort of intergalactic Marie Celeste, the infamous ghost ship found drifting with no crew.
`Even if we find an artefact that was left over — some space device or junk from an alien civilisation — and there are no signs of life on it, that would be the greatest thrill I can imagine having in my lifetime,' he says. `it's really one of the fundamental questions in science, perhaps the most fundamental: are we alone?' Today, we may finally find out, even if it is a bit late. When Oumuamua was first spotted, it was already heading away from Earth, haying passed within 15 million miles of us on October 15. (That's about 85 times the distance from Earth to the moon, which may sound-an awfully long way, but considering the speed it travels, it's really a squeak away.) At that point, no alien passenger seems to have waved from the window. Perhaps they scanned Earth for signs of intelligent life and chose to keep whizzing along. Nevertheless, we can still get a good enough look at Oumuamua's rear end to detect any extraterrestrial technology on board, says Andrew Siemion, the research centre director at the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (Seti) in California, which works with the scientists at Breakthrough Listen. The Green Bank telescope's ten-hour scan will check for any transmissions across the full spectrum of electromagnetic wavelengths, Dr Siemion says.
`It's like a radio station you tune into with your car stereo,' he explains. 'Nature doesn't broadcast on a very specific frequency — it smears it out. Technology behaves differently. It can compress electromagnetic energy. So we look for those specific signs and for repeating patterns which nature doesn't tend to do. We look for structure.'
Presumably they are also looking for Nobel Prizes, along with a place in the roll-call of humankind's greatest discoveries.
On the other hand, if Green Bank draws a blank, there is always the possibility that the aliens are, using technologies that even our best kit can't detect. That, of course, is one of the challenges of hunting for aliens.
Meanwhile, Oumuamua will still present us with a host of other problematic questions.
For example, where did this weird object come from?
Scientists' initial calculations suggested Oumuamua came from Vega, a star some 25 light years away in the Lyra constellation. This might be plausible, were it not for the fact that, even travelling at its amazing speed, it would have taken around 300,000 years to get here.
But space doesn't stand still, and Lyra wasn't in that position 300,000 years ago. Instead, it's likely Oumuamua has been travelling through space for hundreds of millions of years.
Furthermore, how many other Oumuamuas are there pinging about, and could they pose a lethal danger to us if they were to come rather closer than this one?
The answers to those questions seem to be 'a lot', and 'yes'.
That astronomers have finally confirmed the existence of such an 'interstellar interloper' (as they call it) may prove earlier theories true — that there are multitudes of these things flying through our cosmic neighbourhood.
A NEW report in The Astrophysical Journal, by astronomers at the University of California, makes the bold projection that there could be as many as 1,000 interstellar visitors arriving and leaving our solar system every year — or one every three days.
Oumuamua is now due to pass Jupiter in May 2018, and Saturn in January 2019. After that, it will fade from view and leave us for ever. But what about the others? The odds suggest that our planet has survived countless near-misses by these intergalactic speedsters. And each time one shoots past, the odds against a collision can only get smaller.
It is not clear what would happen if one were to hit us. But a report in the respected journal Nature warns that the sheer speed of an intergalactic object such as Oumuamua would make its impact on Earth more catastrophic than any wrought by a comet or asteroid from within our home solar system. Depending on its size, it is possible it could wipe out life on the planet.
The most likely lesson Oumuamua brings is that we may be a cosmic hair's width away from being smashed out of existence, just like our dinosaur forebears. With that in mind, perhaps it would be reassuring if this interstellar visitor turned out to be a tin can full of aliens.

Oumuamua is a Hawaiian term meaning `a messenger from afar arriving first'.

SIGNALS FROM BEYOND

Page 99/100

"So far the most important find was a signal detected at the Ohio University 'Big Ear' radio telescope in August 1977. Known by SETI researchers and enthusiasts as the 'Wow' signal, after the monoyllabic exclamation written on the computer print-out by an astonished astronomer at the station, it lasted exactly thirty-seven seconds and appears to have come from the direction of Sagittarius. Although, most strikingly, the signal was a narrow-band signal precisely at the hydrogen frequency of 1420 MHz, it has not been detected even a second time, in Sagittarius or anywhere else."

If I forget Thee, Oh Earth

"He stared into the west, away from the blinding splendour of the sun - and there were the stars, as he had been told but had never quite believed. He gazed at them for a long time marvelling that anything could be so bright and yet so tiny. They were intense unscintillating points, and suddenly he remembered a rhyme he had once read in one of his father's books:

Twinkle, Twinkle, little star,

How I wonder what you are."

Zeitgeist is originally a German expression that means "the spirit (Geist) of the time (Zeit)". It denotes the intellectual and cultural climate of an era. The German pronunciation of the word is [ˈtsa͡ɪtga͡ɪst] (IPA). The concept of Zeitgeist goes back to the German philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder. In 1769 he wrote a critique of the work Genius seculi by the philologist Christian Adolph Klotz (German Wikipedia article) and introduced the word Zeitgeist into German as a translation of genius seculi (Latin: genius - "g

[German : Zeit, time (from Middle High German zit, from Old High German) + Geist, spirit; see poltergeist]

[German : Zeit, time (from Middle High German zit, from Old High German) + Geist, spirit; see poltergeist]

Zeitgeist [tsyt-gyst], the German word for ‘time-spirit’, more often translated as ‘spirit of the age’. It usually refers to the prevailing mood or attitude of a given period. The spirit of the times; the dominant beliefs of a particular period. The term is usually applied to the study of literature, but it has also been applied to sport (for example, in connection with the current belief that winning is all that matters)

Origins The concept of Zeitgeist goes back to Johann Gottfried Herder and other German Romantics such as Cornelius Jagdmann, but is best known in relation to Hegel's philosophy of history. In 1769 Herder wrote a critique of the work Genius seculi by the philologist Christian Adolph Klotz (German Wikipedia article) and introduced the word Zeitgeist into German as a translation of genius seculi (Latin: genius - "guardian spirit" and saeculi - "of the century").

The German Romantics, habitually tempted to reduce the past to essences, treated the Zeitgeist as an historical character in its own right, rather than a generalized description for an era.

Definitions "Zeitgeist" refers to the ethos of a select group of people, that express a particular (predominantly post-modern) world view, which is prevalent at a particular period of socio-cultural progression.

Zeitgeist is the experience of a dominant cultural climate that defines, particularly in Hegelian thinking, an era in the dialectical progression of a people or the world at large. Hegel's main contribution to the formulation of the concept of Volksgeist is the attribution of a historical character to the concept. The spirit of a nation is one of the manifestations of "World Spirit" (Weltgeist). That Spirit is essentially alive and active throughout mankind's history. Now, the spirit of a nation is an intermediate stage of world history as the history of the World Spirit. The World Spirit gives impetus to the realization of the historical spirits of various nations (Volksgeister').

The spirits of individual nations are both the articulations (Gliederungen) of an organization and its realization. The spirits of individual nations represent a segment of the World Spirit out of which emerges the unlimited universal spirit. A comparison is introduced here between the status of an individual and that of a nation's spirit. In the process of his formation the individual undergoes various changes without, however, losing his identity. As a part of world history, a nation—exhibiting a certain trend expressed in its Volksgeist— plays its part in the total process of world history. But once it contributes its share to world history it can no longer play a role in the process of world history.

NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM – Origin and Meaning
of the Motto Beneath the American Pyramid

"Novus Ordo Seclorum" was the motto suggested in 1782 by Charles Thomson, the Founding Father chosen by the Continental Congress to come up with the final design for the Great Seal of the United States.

Translating NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM

Novus means: new, young, novel.
Ordo means: row, series, order.
Seclorum means: of the ages, generations, or centuries.
An accurate translation of Novus Ordo Seclorum is "A New Order of the Ages," but the meaning of this motto is better understood when seen in its original context.

Source of NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM
The motto Novus Ordo Seclorum was coined by Charles Thomson in June 1782. He adapted it from a line in Virgil's Eclogue IV, a pastoral poem that expresses the longing for a new era of peace and happiness which was written by the famed Roman writer in the first century B.C.

The following passage at the beginning of the poem refers to the Sibyl who prophesied the fate of the Roman empire. For a better sense of the Latin text's meaning, below are two translations (by James Rhoades and by C. S. Calverley).

Now the last age by Cumae's Sibyl sung
Has come and gone, and the majestic roll
Of circling centuries begins anew:
Justice returns, returns old Saturn's reign,
With a new breed of men sent down from heaven.
Only do thou, at the boy's birth in whom
The iron shall cease, the golden age arise. . .

Under thy guidance, whatso tracks remain
Of our old wickedness, once done away
Shall free the earth from never-ceasing fear.
He shall receive the life of gods, and see
Heroes with gods commingling, and himself
Be seen of them, and with his father's worth
Reign o'er a world at peace.

Come are those last days that the Sybil sang:
The ages' mighty march begins anew.
Now come the virgin, Saturn reigns again:
Now from high heaven descends a wondrous race.
Thou on the newborn babe – who first shall end
That age of iron, bid a golden dawn. . .

Thou, trampling out what prints our crimes have left,
Shalt free the nations from perpetual fear.
While he to bliss shall waken; with the Blest
See the Brave mingling, and be seen of them,
Ruling that world o'er which his father's arm shed peace.

That key phrase (bolded above) has also been translated as:
a "great series or mighty order of ages is born anew."

The original Latin in Virgil's Eclogue IV (line 5) is:
"Magnus ab integro seclorum nascitur ordo."

Thomson could read Latin, and Virgil was his one of his favorite poets. Inspired by the above passage, he coined the motto: "Novus Ordo Seclorum" and placed it beneath the unfinished pyramid where he explained it signifies "the beginning of the new American Æra," which commences from the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

An accurate translation of Novus Ordo Seclorum is:
"A New Order of the Ages"

Einstein's blunder. - When Einstein tried to refute quantum physics with his now famous dictum 'God does not play dice' He revealed his ignorance of scripture, for God does indeed play dice in the form of a game called urim and thummim. These flat stone dice are mentioned many times in the Hebrew Bible. Although urim and thummim actually belonged to God (Ps.-Philo 47:2) they were jealously guarded by the high priest either in his ephod (an oracular pouch) or in a pocket by his chest. The exact manner in which urim and thummim was played has been lost to the mysteries of time, but it is thought they provided the same function as a coin when it is flipped for heads or tails.

GREAT PHILOSOPHIES OF THE EAST

E. W. F. Tomlin 1952

"Like the conpilers of the Old Testament: the editors of the Rig-Veda anthology were, careful to preserve intact material beloning to different epochs, We are thus able to trace the development of the early Aryan, religious consciousness , just as a reading of early and later parts of the Bible affords us an enlarged conception of the nature of the Hebrew Yahve. There is wisdom in this refusal on the part of priestly guardians to suppress the primitive elements of their faith; for these are better kept well before the eye than allowed to fester, as the result of exision, in that uneasy corner to be found in the most devout conscience. Some of the vedic hymns are merely satirical, such as that addressed 'To Frogs', which is considered to be a satire on the priesthood; or straightforward vers de societe- such as that on the 'The Gambler', of whose ('dice dearer than soma') it is said:

Downward they roll, and then spring quickly upward, and handless, force

The man with hands to serve them.

Cast on the board, like lumps of magic charcoal, though cold themselves, they burn

The heart to ashes."

"In Puranic literature the Hindu gods, like those of the Greeks, disport themselves by descending to the human condition and allowing them selves to be carried away by human passions. This is perhaps a way of saying that at every level of /Page 98/ life- divine, human, or animal-the problem and predicament of life is the same; an eternal giving-in to the temptation of losing control of the situation, of trusting oneself to chance-the passion of the gambler. Hence the words of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita " I am the gambling of the cheat."

The psychology of guessing and gambling

John Cohen 1960

"The propounding of a riddle to an an opponent served a purpose similar to that of divination, for it provided him with an opportunity to demonstrate that the gods supported- him. The questioner held him bound until he found the solution, and once he had found it he was free. The riddle thus had a sacred significance. 10,11 Divination by lot or riddle was never merely a resort to meaningless chance. It was an appeal directed to ssupernatural powers, as when the Greek heroes cast lots to decide who would fight with Hector.12 Since it is impossible to predict the fall of a die or the result of casting lots the outcome must presumably be decided by divine intervention. The professional diviners in the market-places of China foretold the future by means of the samse lots with which the people gambled. To this day playing cards are used for telling fortunes as well as for gambling, on the assumption that a supernatural force influences the shuffling of the cards and hence governs the result. Divination embodies the idea that the gods themselves govern the universe by gambling. The Ases of Scandinavian myths, like the Hindu Siva, god of a thousand names', determinev the fate of mankind by throw-/Page 58/ing dice. So, two, in Homer's Illiad (Bookxv), Poseidon, Zeus and Hades divide the world between them by shaking lots, which by their special power could reveal the will of the gods.13 In the myth of Osiris, Rhea (Nut= the heaven) had five children born on the the five 'epagomenal' days of the year, after the 360th day. Hermes (Thoth) had won those days during a game of draughts with Selene (the moon).

I look around but its you I cant replace I feel so cold and I long for your embrace I keep crying baby, baby, please...

The last words of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The German poet, novelist, playwright, courtier, and scientist, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832) is widely accepted as being one of the key figures in Western culture. His masterwork, Faust, has had an influence in many fields, notably drama and psychology.

His last request was: More light!

Background to Goethe's last words

Throughout his life, Goethe had a deep fascination for the physical and metaphorical effects of light on humans. Whilst being best remembered now for his literary works, he himself believed the scientific treatise The Theory of Colours, which he published in 1810, to be his most important work.

Although a confirmed non-believer for almost all of his life, a year before dying Goethe sided with the eclectic Hypsistarian sect, writing in a letter to a friend that:

"A joyous light thus beamed at me suddenly out of a dark age, for I had the feeling that all my life I had been aspiring to qualify as a Hypsistarian."

He spent the evening before his death discussing optical phenomena with his daughter-in-law.

All of the above might lead us to believe that his celebrated deathbed cry of Mehr Licht! (More light!) was a plea for increased enlightenment before dying. The truth appears to be more prosaic. What he actually said (in German) was:

"Do open the shutter of the bedroom so that more light may enter".

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT

Dylan Thomas

(27 October 1914 – 9 November 1953)

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796), also known as Rabbie Burns, the Bard of Ayrshire, Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets, was a Scottish poet and lyricist.

"A Red, Red Rose" is a 1794 song in Scots by Robert Burns based on traditional sources.
The song is also referred to by the title "Oh, My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose is often published as a poem.

O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in june;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That’s sweetly play'd in tune:

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry:

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun:
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve
And fare thee weel, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.

INVICTUS = 117-36-9

"Invictus" is a short Victorian poem by the English poet William Ernest Henley (1849–1903). It was written in 1875 and published in 1888 in his first volume of poems, Book of Verses, in the section Life and Death (Echoes).[1]

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning's of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.[1]

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS

Compiled by Charles Legge

Page 68

QUESTION Alfred Hitchcock made a film (never released) in the Tyrolean village of Obergurgi, Austria. Does the movie still exist?

THE Mountain Eagle (aka Fear O'God) (1926) was Alfred Hitchcock's second film as director and, like his The Pleasure Garden (1925), it was an Anglo-German co-production.

British directors were often dispatched to Germany at this time to benefit from the country's superior production techniques. Both these films belong to the silent era, and although The Pleasure Garden survives pretty much intact, The Mountain Eagle remains on the British Film Institute's list of lost films...."

"When films by famous directors go missing, they're often thought of, much like stolen paintings, as missing masterpieces. This is unlikely in the case of The Mountain Eagle..."

However, it is an annoying hole in an otherwise complete Hitchcock canon of 53 films. The Mountain Eagle is on the list of the 100 most wanted films and no copy exists in any film library nor even, it would seem, in private hands.

MOUNTING MISGIVINGS

"But the day would come, Settembrini said, with his suave smile; it would come, he repeated, if not on the wings of doves, then on the pinions of eagles; and dawn would break over Europe, the dawn of universal brotherhood, in the name of justice, science, and human reason.

THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN

THE THUNDERBOLT

Page 709

Softly, as though on the wings of doves, came the words of Herr Ludovico. Yet again, when he came to speak of the unification and universal well being of the liberated peoples, there mingled a sound - he neither knew nor willed it, of course - as of the rushing pinions of eagles. That / Page 710 / was the political key, the grandfatherly inheritance that united in him with the humanistic gift of the father, to make up the litterateur - precisely as humanism and politics united in the lofty ideal of civilization, an ideal wherein were blended the mildness of doves and the boldness of eagles. That ideal was only biding its time, until the day dawned, the Day of the People, when,. the principle of reaction should be laid low, and the Holy Alliance of civic democracies take Its place. Yes, here seemed to sound two voices, with differing counsels. For Herr Settembrini was a humanitarian, yet at the same time, half explicitly, he was warlike too. In the duel with the outrageous little Naphta he had borne himself like a man. But in general it still remained rather vague what his position was to be, when humanity in an outburst of enthusiasm united itself with politics in support of a triumphant and dominating world-civilization, and the burgher's pike was dedicated upon the altar of humanity. There was some doubt whether he would then hold back his hand from the shedding of blood. Yes, it seemed the prevailing temper more and more held sway in the Italian's mind and view; the boldness of the eagle was gradually outbidding the mildness of the dove.

Look at Xipe Totec’s triangular nose and round eyes; they are tell-tale signs that he is wearing someone else’s skin on top of his own. His ‘extra’ hands and feet are actually the flapping extremities of this human hide. (Written/compiled by Julia Flood/Mexicolore)

20 day solar calendar period or “month”
As a god of agriculture and an emblem of renewal in the Aztec religious cycle, Xipe Totec was worshipped before the rainy season, in March. The ‘month’ or twenty day period dedicated to him was called Tlacaxipeuliztli in Náhuatl. This means ‘The Act of Flaying Men’.

Who was Xipe Totec?
Xipe Totec was an important symbol of fertility, war and the coming of age of young warriors. The human skin that the god’s impersonator, otherwise known as an ‘ixiptla’ (live image), wore for twenty days during the spring festival of Tlacaxipeualiztli (March), was finally discarded during the period of Tozoztontli Xochimanaloya (April). This was a gesture that signified the shedding of the earth’s dry old skin in exchange for a new, verdant one that the rains would soon let flourish.

Many investigators have commented on the union of agriculture and war within the domain of this flayed deity. In preparation for Tlacaxipeualiztli, foreign warriors were caught alive and prepared for the sacred ritual coined by the 16th century Spanish as ‘Gladiatorial Sacrifice’, of which Xipe was a patron. This display took place outside of Xipe Totec’s temple and involved a warrior being tied to a large round stone by a strong rope. He was given simple weapons and little in the way of protection. According to Sahagún, he was then approached by four richly dressed and armed Aztec fighters who fought with him until he was wounded. Finally, he was sacrificed by having his heart pulled from his body by a priest.

It was in Xipe Totec’s temple that young warriors presented their first victims for sacrifice. This is when they came of age and were allowed to don the regalia of the Aztec military.

Mythological character or archaeeological relic? Xipe Totec’s origins.
Xipe Totec’s mythological origins are rooted in the creation of the universe by the divine dual god, Ometeotl, who brought into being the “first genesis” of deities (Taube 1996:180), who were given the task of making the earth. At this stage, Xipe Totec was identifiable as Red Tezcatlipoca, an invocation of the all-powerful creator and destroyer god of the same name. Xipe Totec was one of the gods that sacrificed themselves in order to make the sun move by jumping into a raging fire in the ancient city of Teotihuacan.

The 16th century friar, Bernadino de Sahagún, recorded the testimonies of Nahuas (descendants of the Aztecs) who assured him that Xipe Totec had come from a coastal area called Zapotlan, which in Náhuatl means "Between or Amongst the Zapote Trees".

In archaeological terms, the earliest evidence of Xipe Totec’s existence has been found in the Mexican Gulf Coast and dates back to the preclassic period (1800BC-150AD). It is thought that he was integrated into Aztec mythology during the 15th century, when this belicose tribe came to dominate areas of Tabasco and Veracruz.

Symbol of the renewal of vegetation with the onset of the rainy season, Xipe was among the few Aztec gods represented in Teotihuacan during the classic period (150AD-950AD). He is depicted in ‘remojada’ style ceramics from the epiclassic period (950AD-1050) in El Zapotal, Veracruz. In them, he was represented as an old priest wearing a flayed captive’s skin.

Representations of Xipe Totec...
Xipe was almost always depicted as a man that was encapsulated within another’s flayed hide. With stripes running down his face from the forehead to the jawbone in a smooth line, his features classically showed the ‘cut-out’ appearance of the eye, nose and mouth holes of the second skin. He sported a multi coloured headdress and from it dangled tassles that reached down behind his back. His hair was tied back into two plaits. His rights as a god gave him access to special accessories that brimmed in symbolism and uniqueness such as golden ear plugs and rich, green feathers. One very striking belonging of his was a long sceptre that carried flower-like shapes, that Sahagún likened to poppies, all along it. At the top of the staff was an arrow holder.

On his body, Xipe’s fetid, outer skin had visibly lumpy fat deposits forming on it. Seen from the front, it usually showed an incision where the heart of the flayed victim had been taken out, as well as an area where the penis had been. This ornamental skin was elaborately tied together at the back. The Aztecs dressed both stone sculptures and priests acting as representatives of the god, in human flesh. Of course, Xipe Totec appeared mostly naked and some records of him show that he was tinted both yellow and tawny.

Xipe Totec’s Temple
Xipe Totec’s dark, cave-like temple was called Yopico (‘the place of Yopi’, Xipe Totec’s Zapotec name). As we have described in another article on Tlaloc, the rain god, caves were symbolic of fertility and renewal. The Aztecs believed in a mythical realm called Tlalocan, a great cave situated inside a mountain. Tlalocan housed all important grains such as corn, chía and amaranth. It was also the home of the rain gods, or Tlaloque. They decided when to bring much needed water to farmers’ crops.

Yopico was seen as a shrine of fertility and growth. It was used during the months of Tlacaxipeualiztli and Tozotontli for agricultural rites. Seen as an entrance into the earth, Yopico had a sunken receptacle on its floor, where offerings were laid in a gesture of ritual communication with the soil. It was here that the Aztec emperor, called ‘Tlatoani’ in Náhuatl, would make an offering of his own blood when he was crowned.

Nevertheless, Yopico was also symbolic of war. It was in Yopico that young warriors presented their war captives in time for the spring sacrifices. This was a rite of passage for them and it served to emphasise the importance the Aztecs gave to the connection between war and agriculture.

The Aztec Month of Tlacaxipeualiztli
6th March - 26th March
Xipe Totec was the patron of the Tlacaxipeualiztli festivities that dominated the second ‘month’ or twenty day period of the solar calendar in March. The word itself means ‘the act of wearing skins’.
The ceremonies were aimed at invoking the change of seasons from dry to rainy. It was thought that the dead, rotton shell of the earth at the end of the last agricultural year must be peeled back in order to reveal a new skin that was young and fecund. For this reason, the ‘double skinned’ Xipe Totec was significant as an enforcer of agricultural transition during the onset of spring.

Ceremonies
To mark the beginning of the festivities, captives of war were prepared and presented at the main Aztec temple for sacrifice. Before they died, their owners would tear off the hair at their crowns and then walk them to the temple and their fate at the sacrificial stone. According to Sahagún, those captives who resisted would be dragged up the stairs of the temple - quite a long way! The stone was high and narrow and the captive was bent over with his back against it. Five men then grasped him by his ankles, wrists and head and a priest proceeded to cut open his chest with an obsidian knife and pulled out his beating heart.

This over, the sacrificed man would have his blood poured into a container that was given to his owner and his body thrown over the temple steps and collected by a team of old men called ‘quaquacuiltin’. Later on, the corpse would be skinned for participation in the following ritual.

Another ceremony played out a series of mock attacks between two groups of young men. One group of lads called ‘Tototecti’ dressed in the skins of flayed captives and seated themselves on mats. Within their ranks was Xipe Totec’s impersonator who was also dressed in a skin.
An opposing team of youths approached the seated men and provoked them into battle with their taunting. The Tototecti, roused into fighting back, chased their opponents and both parties engaged in a staged scene of conflict. A youth who was able to catch his opponent could then put him in ‘jail’, where the price of freedom was that of handing over a personal possession.

These exercises were followed by a tour of the Tototecti around Tenochtitlan (the Aztec city). They would enter peoples’ houses and ask for alms in return for Xipe Totec’s blessing. Invited inside, the deity’s impersonator would be asked to sit down on a mat of leaves and wear a garland of corn cobs and flowers. He would be given pulque, an alcoholic beverage made from the Maguey cactus plant. The priests and deity impersonators who wore human skins during the Tlacaxipeualiztli festivities did this for twenty or forty days after the sacrificial ceremonies. During this time the skins had the opportunity to rot and fester and when they were eventually thrown into holes or caves, they were being thrust aside for the emergence of youth, spring, and fertilty. As Karl Taube aptly puts it: “As a seed germinates, it feeds off the rotting hull around it”. The seed becomes a renewed Xipe Totec, a new year, and a new agricultural cycle.

Gladiatorial sacrifice
The Tlacaxipeualiztli festivities are famous for one of their sacrifice ceremonies, coined by the Spanish as Gladiatorial Sacrifice.br
A captive warrior who had proved himself worthy on the field of battle was made to stand on a flat, circular shaped stone, much like the Sun Stone. He was tied to its center by a rope around his waist and was only able to walk as far as the circumference of the stone. Given nothing to defend himslef but a club, this man would have to defend himself against the finest Aztec soldiers, warriors of the Eagle and Jaguar ranks. If he managed to kill one, then another would come. An incredible fighter might have to face as many as four opponents.

Gladiatorial Sacrifice in the Codex Tudela

The captives always lost their battle and were then sacrificed by special priests. There is one record of an exception, however. During the reign of Moctezuma Xocoyotzin (1502-1520) a man called Tlahuicole managed to survive the ceremony of Gladiatorial Sacrifice. As he had proven himself to be a deft and strong in combat, the emperor granted him his freedom. Tlahuicole, however, refused to walk away, insisting that he should have the right to a glorious death by sacrifice. He offer himself to the priest and sacrificial stone, and had his heart cut out.

The Aztecs believed that the souls of warriors who died in combat and women killed during child labour would travel to the land of the sun and follow him on his orbit in the sky.
During Tlacaxipeualiztli, a captive warrior, usually one who had proved his valour on the field of battle, was forced to fight Aztec warriors. Poorly armed and protected, a normal man would usually fail against his heavily clad opponent. Nevertheless, a fighter who won the first round, showing great courage and strength, had to endure combat against another three soldiers of the highest Eagle and Jaguar military ranks! Once he was wounded he would meet his demise on the sacrificial stone.
